Winter Is Fading Fast – I’ve got evidence!

You may not believe this but Winter is starting to fade. I have seen proof. The days are getting a little bit longer. I know because I bike to my day job and if I leave at a decent hour I don’t need a light. Want more proof? I saw a weather forecast that said we were going to hit the high 50’s next week. That’s really going to chip away at Old Man Winter’s grasp on our spirits.

Longer brighter days and warmer temps mean everything will start waking up in a few weeks. For Fly fishermen that means we’ve got to get busy! March is prime time for stoneflies and even some dark caddis. I’ve been hibernating for a while but I’m ready to get out there and skate some bugs for hungry trout. I’ll be able to start running trips once we get into the middle of March. Send an email if you’d like to get on the calendar now. It’s going to fill up fast as the family fishing calendar becomes more involved – my interns are growing up fast and keeping me busy. They’ll be rowing me around with real skill soon enough.

If you’re like me, fly tying is keeping you hanging on till the weather breaks. This stonefly pattern below has been a go to of mine for a decade or so and I’m busy tying away so I can toss them into the trees with a wild recklessness that only comes from a long winter spent at the vise. I’m always flattered when people send me photos of their flies or tag me on social media – tag and share away and thank you to those that have shared photos with me! I love it!

Stay warm and safe and get your gear ready! – Micah
